Bling your Baubles!

December 5, 2011 by Abby 5 Comments

Christmas Decorations

Christmas Decorations

These baubles are a nice and easy project. You can write your friends’ names or the year on them and tie them around a box of chocolates or a bottle of wine for a quick gift. Or you can just decorate them with pretty patterns. Boxes of plain baubles are usually pretty cheap, even before the sales.

Glitter Decorated Baubles

You’ll need:
Some plain baubles
Glitter pen*

Decorating them is pretty straight-forward. For the patterned ones, I just did the designs freehand, making them up as I went along. The names I did freehand too. If you’re worried about messing it up, you could write on them with a fine whiteboard marker first and then go over that with the glitter pen.

If you’re doing an all-over design, do one half, let it dry and then do the other half. That way, you have a side you can rest it on while it dries. I sit them in egg cartons while they’re drying.

Hubby was telling me the blog needs more tutorials and that I should make this up into a tutorial, but really, it’s just writing on a ball…it can’t get much easier than that!

*I use the Dimensionals glitter fabric paint because it dries without shrinking, giving a nice raised effect. They’re usually for fabric, but it sticks on to the baubles well. I had the tube already from a previous project (about 10 years ago) and it’s still good as new. You could also use a normal glitter pen, or even some craft glue and then shake loose glitter over the top.

@LindsiB – I tried doing it with the glue and glitter too but it didn’t look as sparkly and was much messier. Doing it this way also means the glitter doesn’t flake off.

I have tried using glitter glue pen and sprinkling glitter over the top looked good but after drying went to blow away the excess glitter and the writting come straight off. Tried googling to find out how to stop this from happening but still have not found a solution. I also tried spraying a adhesive spray over the top but it was not clear. Any advice will much appreciated 🙂

Hi Brianna, When I made mine, I didn’t sprinkle glitter on top as the glitter glue pens already have glitter in them. When they dry, the white glue goes clear and you can see the glitter. If you’re wanting to use glue and separate glitter, then I would use something like mod podge.

Secret pyjamas! My dress for this year's @sew_melb Secret pyjamas! My dress for this year's @sew_melbourne garden party was the Charlie Caftan by @closetcorepatterns. I shortened it at the shoulders by an inch and think I shortened it at the bottom too. I altered the pockets so they attach into the waist panel, because I hate when in-seam pockets flap about and pull at the side seams. The side slits are a double turn narrow hem as the overlock and turn as suggested in the pattern looked puckered. The fabric is a Cotton + Steel rayon by Masaru Suzuki, which is a dream to sew with. I've made another dress in the red colour way.
Beans from the garden and my favourite way to eat Beans from the garden and my favourite way to eat them... Stir fry in hot oil (coconut is delish but whatever you have is fine) until a bit burnt (about 5 mins). Chuck in a few squirts of fish sauce for the last 5 secs and toss through.
Give them a minute to cool if you can lest you burn your mouth.

A new hat! I used the free #closetcoresunhat. I've A new hat! I used the free #closetcoresunhat. I've added a hair hole, since why don't all hats have that?! Also added some garden wire to the brim. Instead of finishing the brim edge with bias, I did the usual RST stitch, fold and top stitch. That means the brim is a little shorter than the pattern. I wanted to keep the hat lightweight, so it's unlined and has only the two layers of canvas fabric for the brim. The cotton canvas is a vintage fabric from my stash, which originally cost 15 shillings and 9 pence (I think) per yard.
