Reusable Cotton tea bags

Reusable Cotton Tea Bags

Ok, so you probably think I’m mad – reusable tea bags?? Bear with me though.

My cup of tea usually ends up with lots of tea bits in it, and I have to leave the last mouthful or two. The diffuser/tea ball I have does a terrible job of keeping the tea in. My tea press isn’t much better. In the middle of the night when I should have been sleeping I wondered if anyone has made reusable tea bags. Sure enough they have. A quick Google of reusable tea bags the next day had me sorted.

Reusable Cotton Tea Bags

I followed this tutorial on lillyella and in less than 10 mins I had a lovely reusable tea bag all of my own. Even better, I had a beautifully clear cup of tea to enjoy. No more bits!

I used a piece of unbleached calico to test it out and it works really well. Although, I wouldn’t want to use anything thicker. To make the holes in my calico I used a tapestry needle threaded with perle cotton, combining 2 steps in one. I also trimmed the seams with pinking shears so that they don’t fray and I don’t end up with little bits of cotton in my cuppa!

The tutorial makes a little tea bag, similar in size to a paper one, so if you want a nice big one or want to make a bag for a pot, adjust the size as needed.

I made up a few for black tea, and a few for green. The ones I’ve been using for black tea are nice and ‘tea dyed’.

Yes, I could probably just get regular tea bags, but they seem a bit wasteful and I love loose leaf tea. It just seems so much more romantic than an ugly old paper tea bag.

How fabulous! So glad you found my tutorial, and I agree with everything you said about paper tea bags and loose tea!

This is so cute! I’m trying to make potpourri and this is just perfect- so white cloth for tea, colored for potpourri. Thanks! 🙂

The only problem with the design is if the teabag goes too far into the water wouldn’t the tea leaves seep out the top?
I figure if you make it a bit like those plastic sandwich bags that fold over the top into the bag and then draw the strings, maybe that would keep the leaves in? I don’t know if just a description makes sense, I would send a diagram if I could.

    Otherwise, I love this idea.

unless the tea is really really fine, I don’t have this happen. They seem to close up tight enough on their own and keep the tea leaves inside.

I like to put ground cardamom with my black tea sometimes to make homemade Chai, so yeah it tends to be pretty fine.

Secret pyjamas! My dress for this year's @sew_melb Secret pyjamas! My dress for this year's @sew_melbourne garden party was the Charlie Caftan by @closetcorepatterns. I shortened it at the shoulders by an inch and think I shortened it at the bottom too. I altered the pockets so they attach into the waist panel, because I hate when in-seam pockets flap about and pull at the side seams. The side slits are a double turn narrow hem as the overlock and turn as suggested in the pattern looked puckered. The fabric is a Cotton + Steel rayon by Masaru Suzuki, which is a dream to sew with. I've made another dress in the red colour way.

Give them a minute to cool if you can lest you burn your mouth.

A new hat! I used the free #closetcoresunhat. I've A new hat! I used the free #closetcoresunhat. I've added a hair hole, since why don't all hats have that?! Also added some garden wire to the brim. Instead of finishing the brim edge with bias, I did the usual RST stitch, fold and top stitch. That means the brim is a little shorter than the pattern. I wanted to keep the hat lightweight, so it's unlined and has only the two layers of canvas fabric for the brim. The cotton canvas is a vintage fabric from my stash, which originally cost 15 shillings and 9 pence (I think) per yard.
