Biiiiiiig Library Bag!

August 18, 2012 by Abby 48 Comments

Big Library Bag

Regular readers will probably know of my love for the Library. Once a week Roman and I walk down to the library for story time and to pick up whichever books take our fancy. The thing is, that library books are heavy! I mostly borrow non-fiction and usually choose books based on their covers – how very discriminatory of me! I take them home and then have a flick through. I’d love to flick through them while I’m at the Library, but Roman loves to pull all the books off the shelves, so it’s best if I’m quick. This means I end up with a lot of books!

I normally throw them in the bottom of the pram, but the seams are starting to go on my basket, so I thought I should make up a library bag. I wanted it big! Roman loves the word ‘big’! Big car, big blankie, now big library bag. It has nice thick straps so I can sling it over my shoulder comfortably and I put a little patch pocket inside to hold our Library cards.

The fabric is part of the newest range from Prints Charming. It’s stocked at Spotlight and when I saw it out on the floor this week, I snapped some up right away. I love anything bright and colourful! The outer fabric is cotton drill and the inside is a cotton poplin. They’re both lovely fabrics with a great silky feel. I think I’ll have to get some more.

If you would like to make your own Big Library Tote Bag, you can find the pattern in my Shop.

Want to add a centre divider pocket to your Big Tote Bag? See the tutorial here.

Absolutely do a pattern! I love the wide style of it. My library bags are pretty sad. The one I used last year the handles are hanging on by threads. It seems as though we cannot get out of the library without several books each, but I love going to the library and oh how I love books (and cute bags!) and so do my boys.

My dress for this years @sew_melbourne Garden Part My dress for this years @sew_melbourne Garden Party was the Lucca Dress from @schultzapparel. I adore the 18th Century vibe! After toiling my measured size, I ended up going down 2 sizes and after a few minor tweaks I make to most patterns (shorten and move forward the shoulder and realign the side seams) it was good to go. I was planning to finish the front with eyelets but ended up hand sewing in hook and eye tape. I love the clean look! When trying it on I wanted a little more oomph in the hips so I added some tulle hip pads to the sides. I added in seam pockets too because...pockets! The fabric is from deep stash and originally purchased at the Philips Shirt Factory sale in the city maybe 10 years ago?! It was a dream to sew with! I used about 5m because it was only 90cm wide. I'm loving the result and hopefully the weather plays nice and I get another chance to wear it before it turns cold. The dipped waist makes it really comfortable to wear with room for a big lunch! #schlucca #sewmelbourne #sewmelbournegp #imakemyownclothes

I didn't know anyone else who made salad with flowers in it (it was the 80s) and I thought she was a magical witch. I'm so excited to finally grow it in my own garden! When buying veggie seeds I found borage on @theseedcollection so couldn't help myself. Witches unite! ✨🌱
Today Ted and I built a step to make getting up to Today Ted and I built a step to make getting up to front garden a bit easier. Used scraps of timber from the old retaining wall. He wasn't a fan of the circular saw but loved doing the drilling and screwing. Worked out just as I hoped! I don't have a builders square, but turns out a quilting ruler makes an excellent substitute.
