New Cushion Covers for the World Traveller

August 3, 2012 by Abby 4 Comments

Cushions

Before the age of 6 months, Roman had been on 3 long haul flights. He was born in the UK, then we moved back to Australia and we also took a trip to the US. Talk about gluttons for punishment!

The cushions on the reading chair in Roman’s room were due for an update and I wanted to incorporate a bit of an international theme. At the start of the year, I saw that Spotlight were getting in this lovely London themed Linen, so when it came in I snapped it up! At the time, I wasn’t quite sure what I was going to do with it. Anyone else buy fabric just cos you love it?

London Cushion

I flicked through one of my sewing books before making the cushions and it had a great tip. Sometimes the corners of the cushion can look a little pointy, so after cutting out the pieces for the cushions, I slightly tapered the edges towards the corners. It works perfectly!

London Cushion

The London cushion was my first go at an invisible zip. I can’t believe I waited this long! So easy to put in and, well…invisible! I did buy an invisible zip foot, and it’s definitely worth the investment. It makes the job so simple. I didn’t even iron the zip first (like you’re meant to) and the foot unrolls the zip just enough that the stitches go right up to the teeth. I’m a total convert!

London Cushion

The New York cushion was made from an old t shirt and some spotty scraps! I put a double layer of iron on interfacing on the back of the t shirt to stabilize it and then cut out the square. I added the panels to the sides and a bit of topstitching to keep the seams under the spotty side.

Much more suitable for a little boy’s room, don’t you think?!

They both look great! Thanks for the tip about the pointy corners – I hadn’t really thought about that! We have a bit of a joke around here about the I love NY T-shirts, because my son’s name is Noah Young – so I say they are referring to him! 🙂

I think you should come back to England 🙂 Great cushions, the London fabric is very cute.

Love the pillows! I really have to learn how to do an invisible zipper. It’s such a clean look.

Secret pyjamas! My dress for this year's @sew_melb Secret pyjamas! My dress for this year's @sew_melbourne garden party was the Charlie Caftan by @closetcorepatterns. I shortened it at the shoulders by an inch and think I shortened it at the bottom too. I altered the pockets so they attach into the waist panel, because I hate when in-seam pockets flap about and pull at the side seams. The side slits are a double turn narrow hem as the overlock and turn as suggested in the pattern looked puckered. The fabric is a Cotton + Steel rayon by Masaru Suzuki, which is a dream to sew with. I've made another dress in the red colour way.
Beans from the garden and my favourite way to eat Beans from the garden and my favourite way to eat them... Stir fry in hot oil (coconut is delish but whatever you have is fine) until a bit burnt (about 5 mins). Chuck in a few squirts of fish sauce for the last 5 secs and toss through.
Give them a minute to cool if you can lest you burn your mouth.

A new hat! I used the free #closetcoresunhat. I've A new hat! I used the free #closetcoresunhat. I've added a hair hole, since why don't all hats have that?! Also added some garden wire to the brim. Instead of finishing the brim edge with bias, I did the usual RST stitch, fold and top stitch. That means the brim is a little shorter than the pattern. I wanted to keep the hat lightweight, so it's unlined and has only the two layers of canvas fabric for the brim. The cotton canvas is a vintage fabric from my stash, which originally cost 15 shillings and 9 pence (I think) per yard.
