Lovely Liberty

January 30, 2013 by Abby 9 Comments

Liberty Fabric

I feel like I’m moving into a new phase with my clothing. Most of my clothes are really old and ready to throw out, so while I’m pregnant I’m taking the time to think about what I want to wear when I get back into regular clothes and sewing/shopping accordingly. I don’t think I’ve bought clothes for at least 2 years…that’s pretty bad!

Like most crafters, it’s rare that I actually make something for myself. Most things I make are for Roman or gifts for friends. I do the occasional repair of my own clothes, but don’t make a lot for myself. I’m hoping to spend some more time sewing for myself this year. So, I decided to splurge and get myself some Liberty of London Lawn. I figured that having such lovely floral fabric around would entice me to do some ‘Me’ sewing!

I have already used one of the Liberty pieces to make this top, using New Look 6871. I had to make some adjustments to the yoke as it was a bit wide for my shoulders, but now that I have my perfect pattern pieces, I’m looking forward to making a few more.

I used my own construction method for the top, using the magic seams tutorial from BurdaStyle to put the yoke pieces together. Then I gathered the bodice pieces, did the side seams with French seams and overlocked around the arm hole. Then I folded over the overlocking and stitched it down to make a tiny hem. I then tucked the bodice pieces into each yoke piece and put it all together. This may seem like an odd way of putting it together, but it gives a lovely finish and there’s no need for bias binding! You must think I’m allergic to the stuff… the lengths I go to to avoid using it!

The colour of the fabric is much more accurate in the top photo. The wall in the photo below is meant to be cream. The cream walls in this house and all the wood panelling make taking accurately coloured photos a nightmare! I can’t wait to move into the new house with its white walls!

Have you made anything with Liberty?

Sounds like you rewrote the pattern almost completely! Good for you, it shows how talented you are. I don’t think I’ve ever owned any Liberty, that I know of. They look gorgeous! j

Oh la la that is lovely! I haven’t made anything with Liberty fabric but have recently considered splashing out on some too. I think one of the Wikstens I made recently looks a little liberty (the floral one). I also hope to do a bit more sewing for me this year! x

Looking forward to seeing what you sew for yourself. The Wiksten tank would be great in Liberty!

Abby, gorgeous top. Happy to see a mum sewing for herself. I bet you get tons of use from the top which makes the fabric worth it in the end! 🙂

Lol I havent purchased any decent clothing in years either. But recently my partner sent me out to buy a dress for myself with strict instructions not to go near Target/Kmart etc.. LOL. I bought 2. haha.

Now if I could convince him I need some Liberty…..

That’s such a gorgeous top, I will have to check out the pattern. I love all the other prints too – especially the middle one. I have visited the fabric section at Liberty’s a couple of times since I started sewing but haven’t bought anything yet and I’d have trouble deciding.

Secret pyjamas! My dress for this year's @sew_melb Secret pyjamas! My dress for this year's @sew_melbourne garden party was the Charlie Caftan by @closetcorepatterns. I shortened it at the shoulders by an inch and think I shortened it at the bottom too. I altered the pockets so they attach into the waist panel, because I hate when in-seam pockets flap about and pull at the side seams. The side slits are a double turn narrow hem as the overlock and turn as suggested in the pattern looked puckered. The fabric is a Cotton + Steel rayon by Masaru Suzuki, which is a dream to sew with. I've made another dress in the red colour way.

Give them a minute to cool if you can lest you burn your mouth.

A new hat! I used the free #closetcoresunhat. I've A new hat! I used the free #closetcoresunhat. I've added a hair hole, since why don't all hats have that?! Also added some garden wire to the brim. Instead of finishing the brim edge with bias, I did the usual RST stitch, fold and top stitch. That means the brim is a little shorter than the pattern. I wanted to keep the hat lightweight, so it's unlined and has only the two layers of canvas fabric for the brim. The cotton canvas is a vintage fabric from my stash, which originally cost 15 shillings and 9 pence (I think) per yard.
