A Work in Progress

February 20, 2013 by Abby 8 Comments

We are all moved and pretty much unpacked, but things are still a work in progress here. The biggest thing at the moment is that we are still without internet! Does anyone remember life about 15 years ago when that wouldn’t have mattered?! Now, I’m just going mad! I feel so out of touch with the world. I haven’t been checking blogs or reading the news…I feel like I don’t know what’s going on. Hopefully it will be sorted out in the next few days. Right now I’ve got the laptop tethered to hubby’s phone so I can quickly write up this post.

Now onto more exciting news…I’m going to have an actual craft room! The pic above is how it looks at the moment, but hubby is on the case to make it pretty! The 2 storage cubes will be the sides of a cutting table/work space. No more taking over the dining table. Since we moved, we’ve actually been eating at the dining table which is a nice change to the past 2 years. Hubby is pretty happy about it as he’s never been a fan of eating on the couch. The table on the right is for my machines. I’d like a table that isn’t so deep, as most of the space behind the machine is wasted, but that’s not a priority just now. I just managed to squeeze all my fabric into the chest of drawers! A paint job for the drawers is also on the list.

The light in the room is great! The roof is offset and has windows along it, so the light is just everywhere. Even on a fairly dark day it is bright. It’s such a change from the old place. I can’t wait to do some sewing without having to put every light on!

Hopefully I’ll have some pretty, Apartment Therapy worthy before and after photos to come soon!

Would be great to have your very own craft space. I’m thinking about halving the boys huge playroom at the moment for my own sewing space! My thinking is I can keep an I on them playing while I sew x

What a fantastic room! So happy for you. Will be great to have things out of reach when the new one comes too. Can’t wait to see how it turns out.

So true! It’s upstairs too so out of the way of the kids.

Lovely to have your own space! Don’t go for too skinny a desk for the sewing machines or you might find your projects slipping through the railing and down to the level below! I think you actually need more space behind a machine than you’d think.

I know what it’s like with getting Internet connecting when you move – why does it take so long?

Good tip on the table. The one I was looking at is 60cm deep, which I think will be ok. Still waiting on the internet. They said it should be fixed, but it’s still not working! 🙁

I was thinking that with the railing. A mezzanine craft room hey, cool! Looks good so far, lots of potential. You’re going to be even more efficient now. I hope your internet gets sorted soon.

Still waiting on internet. Trying to sort out a temporary solution. The mezzanine part is pretty cool.

Quick and satisfying project today making a brush Quick and satisfying project today making a brush roll for my art supplies. Vintage canvas from the stash (which I think is from a bougie Italian designer). Matching bag to come. Then I can grab and go for my next en plein air session.

My dress for this years @sew_melbourne Garden Part My dress for this years @sew_melbourne Garden Party was the Lucca Dress from @schultzapparel. I adore the 18th Century vibe! After toiling my measured size, I ended up going down 2 sizes and after a few minor tweaks I make to most patterns (shorten and move forward the shoulder and realign the side seams) it was good to go. I was planning to finish the front with eyelets but ended up hand sewing in hook and eye tape. I love the clean look! When trying it on I wanted a little more oomph in the hips so I added some tulle hip pads to the sides. I added in seam pockets too because...pockets! The fabric is from deep stash and originally purchased at the Philips Shirt Factory sale in the city maybe 10 years ago?! It was a dream to sew with! I used about 5m because it was only 90cm wide. I'm loving the result and hopefully the weather plays nice and I get another chance to wear it before it turns cold. The dipped waist makes it really comfortable to wear with room for a big lunch! #schlucca #sewmelbourne #sewmelbournegp #imakemyownclothes
My grandma always grew borage and would put it in My grandma always grew borage and would put it in salads. I didn't know anyone else who made salad with flowers in it (it was the 80s) and I thought she was a magical witch. I'm so excited to finally grow it in my own garden! When buying veggie seeds I found borage on @theseedcollection so couldn't help myself. Witches unite! ✨🌱
Today Ted and I built a step to make getting up to Today Ted and I built a step to make getting up to front garden a bit easier. Used scraps of timber from the old retaining wall. He wasn't a fan of the circular saw but loved doing the drilling and screwing. Worked out just as I hoped! I don't have a builders square, but turns out a quilting ruler makes an excellent substitute.
