Smitten with the Barossa!

November 26, 2015 by Abby 2 Comments

Hubby and I recently got back from our 10th Anniversary holiday. What an incredible holiday! I had such a lovely, relaxing time that I did not want to come back. We spent four days in the Barossa Valley, which is Australian wine country for anyone that doesn't know. The Barossa is known for their big, bold red though we tried all kinds of wine and bought heaps to bring back ...

The Selfish Swap – Holiday Edition

October 27, 2015 by Abby 6 Comments

I can't believe how quickly this year has gone! With the festive season almost upon us, I thought it was the perfect time for round two of the selfish swap. The first round was so much fun I was dying to do it again. No idea what I'm talking about? You can read all about the Selfish Swap here. This time it's a bit festive. But as always, you make the rules, so there's no ...

Cotton + Steel Quilt – A Work in Progress

October 7, 2015 by Abby 11 Comments

You might have seen this quilt in my Instagram feed, but I'm posting a few in progress shots of my Cotton + Steel Quilt here for y'all! When Ms Midge announced the Cotton + Steel charm swap, I jumped straight in. I love the Cotton + Steel range and thought this was a wonderful way to get my hands on 112 different charm squares from the range. For this quilt I used 110 of them. ...

Strawberry Sorbet

September 17, 2015 by Abby 2 Comments

Strawberry Sorbet is a delicious way to use up cheap or excess strawberries. In fact, most fruits make a tasty sorbet. I've made strawberry, raspberry, mango, lemon, lime, pineapple...the list goes on! I find it doesn't last all that well so it's best to eat it with in a couple of days...not that we have any trouble with that! Strawberry Sorbet makes approx 1L 3/4 cup ...

A Happy Quilt with a Sad Story

August 21, 2015 by Abby 32 Comments

A few weeks ago, Roman's friend's Dad died. She is a friend from his kinder class and everyone in the kinder community was shocked and upset. We all wanted to help in some way but had no idea what we could do. What would a family who has just lost their father/husband need?! We've organised a dinner roster for the next couple of months, but when I was talking to some friends ...

How to Host a Stress Free Birthday Brunch

July 15, 2015 by Abby 2 Comments

Ted turned 2 recently and we had a bit of a party. Since having kids, the thought of parties instantly makes my blood pressure go up. So many people! So much food! And drinks! And noise! Argh!!! Anyway, I thought it was time to put my endless list making to good use and organise a stress free birthday party. How do you do that you say? Well, the key was to make sure everything ...

Mega Bibs for a Baby Shower

July 1, 2015 by Abby 10 Comments

Baby news is always exciting, so when Renee and Alisa told me they were organising a blogging baby shower for Jenya, I was straight in. I'm a practical person at heart which means I like to give practical gifts. Something that will be used over and over again. The Mega Bib was one of those baby items for me. They provide great coverage and the snap up crumb catcher is perfect ...

7 Quilt Mistakes I Made

June 2, 2015 by Abby 19 Comments

I have made two quilts now (Luminous and Charm Dash) so I'm no expert, but I wanted to share the silly mistakes I made with my first quilt. Hopefully, they will help one of you so you don't make these quilt mistakes too! 1. Not using enough pins I thought I had used plenty of pins when I was making my quilt sandwich (the backing, batting and quilt top all 'sandwiched' ...

Geometric Bird Pouch

May 12, 2015 by Abby 3 Comments

I recently participated in the open wide pouch swap on Instagram. All the swappers made an Open Wide Pouch from the wonderful pattern by Anna of Noodlehead. I've made several of these and I adore this pattern...so well written and it produces a brilliant pouch. When I read that my swap buddy loved birds I knew straight away that I wanted to give this Geometric Paper Pieced Bird ...

Raspberry Amaretti Crush Brownies

Raspberry Amaretti Crush Brownies

April 15, 2015 by Abby 2 Comments

These are my attempt at the most delicious brownies I've ever had! The original brownie was from Jamie's Italian. Usually when we go out for dinner, I like to try something different, but every time we went there I would get this brownie for dessert. It's been a long time since I had them, but I think this version comes pretty close. As if a brownie isn't good enough on it's ...

Charm Dash Quilt

April 8, 2015 by Abby 9 Comments

I can now say that I've made two quilts! Yep, two whole quilts. This one was made using the pattern Charm Dash from Ms Midge. This quilt is not one to snuggle under with a hangover...it's very bright! I even had trouble taking photos of it. I had the pink and green (Peapod from KONA) as well as a FQ each of the Alison Glass prints already in my stash. I needed to buy another FQ ...

Secret pyjamas! My dress for this year's @sew_melb Secret pyjamas! My dress for this year's @sew_melbourne garden party was the Charlie Caftan by @closetcorepatterns. I shortened it at the shoulders by an inch and think I shortened it at the bottom too. I altered the pockets so they attach into the waist panel, because I hate when in-seam pockets flap about and pull at the side seams. The side slits are a double turn narrow hem as the overlock and turn as suggested in the pattern looked puckered. The fabric is a Cotton + Steel rayon by Masaru Suzuki, which is a dream to sew with. I've made another dress in the red colour way.
Beans from the garden and my favourite way to eat Beans from the garden and my favourite way to eat them... Stir fry in hot oil (coconut is delish but whatever you have is fine) until a bit burnt (about 5 mins). Chuck in a few squirts of fish sauce for the last 5 secs and toss through.
Give them a minute to cool if you can lest you burn your mouth.

A new hat! I used the free #closetcoresunhat. I've A new hat! I used the free #closetcoresunhat. I've added a hair hole, since why don't all hats have that?! Also added some garden wire to the brim. Instead of finishing the brim edge with bias, I did the usual RST stitch, fold and top stitch. That means the brim is a little shorter than the pattern. I wanted to keep the hat lightweight, so it's unlined and has only the two layers of canvas fabric for the brim. The cotton canvas is a vintage fabric from my stash, which originally cost 15 shillings and 9 pence (I think) per yard.
