Valentine’s Day Sundae

February 13, 2012 by Abby 4 Comments

They say the way to a man's heart is through his stomach and I suspect this applies to a lot of girls too...it certainly does for me! Hubby and I both have a huge sweet tooth and for Valentine's Day we decided to make up our own little sundaes. You won't find anything fancy on this blog for Valentine's Day. No heart shaped macarons or 10 layer pink ombre cakes...just something ...

Waste not, want not – Spring Onions for Free

February 10, 2012 by Abby 5 Comments

I feel like a bit of a chump for not trying this sooner. All the times I've thrown out the bottoms of my Spring Onions when I could have been growing new ones for nothing! I thought that this must be a myth I've heard, but it was no effort to test out and I'm so glad I did. Also, why do these little things have so many names? Scallions, spring onions, green onions, ...

Making a Kids Bath Robe from 2 Towels

February 7, 2012 by Abby 15 Comments

Last week, we took Roman swimming for the first time. Once he figured out he could splash, he loved it! So we took him again. After several failed attempts to try and book a baby swim class, I've decided I'm going to teach him to swim myself. After just 2 trips to the pool, I've realised that a towel doesn't cut it. On our walk home from the pool, Roman's towel fell off the pram ...

Make your own Baking Powder

February 2, 2012 by Abby 2 Comments

You probably think I'm crazy for even suggesting this, but I promise you there's method to my madness. For years now I've been making my own self raising flour. It's just plain (all purpose) flour mixed with baking powder. Nice and simple. I like knowing it's fresh when I make it, rather than sitting in the cupboard for ages and it also means I can store less in the pantry ...

Rules for Mums with Boys

January 30, 2012 by Abby 1 Comment

Roman has been a ball of energy lately. I have a few posts that I've started, but haven't been able to get any photos for, because he wont sit still for longer than a millisecond! We took him swimming on the weekend to try and burn up some of the energy. So today, I don't have anything to show you that I've made, just something that I came across and thought was worth keeping ...

Oliver + S Bucket Hat – Pattern Review

January 27, 2012 by Abby 29 Comments

August 2019 - It appears this pattern is no longer available for free download. This is the first Oliver + S pattern I have tried out and I love it! It is well written, easy to understand and makes a great finished product that is true to size. It's funny that I say true to size, I actually had to make the size 3 - 5 years, even though Roman is only 15 months. That is because ...

Strawberry Sauce for Free!

January 24, 2012 by Abby 3 Comments

This syrup is great for using up strawberries that aren't quite up to eating standard. You know, those ones you bought and then forgot about? You can also collect the tops you cut off (leaves included) and make the sauce from them. My sister in law said this was the best thing she's ever eaten! Pretty delicious for food scraps. If you don't have the lemon juice handy, don't ...

T-Shirt Shopping Bag

January 21, 2012 by Abby 9 Comments

I always have a reusable shopping bag in the bottom of my handbag. The one I've been using finally died, so I made up a new one from an old t-shirt.This is really simple and quick and a great way to give new life to an old t-shirt. The jersey makes the bag nice and stretchy so you can fit a lot into them too.T-shirt Shopping BagYou'll need:An old t-shirt (or a new one)Sewing ...

Candy Cane Brownies

January 18, 2012 by Abby 3 Comments

I love to put Candy Canes on the Christmas tree, but we seem to forget that they're there and I've always got some leftover after I take down the tree. Chocolate and mint go great together and this recipe is a delicious way to use up any leftover candy canes. The mixture is all made up in the saucepan, so you don't have too many dishes to clean up. Candy Cane ...

Smoothie Time!

January 15, 2012 by Abby 1 Comment

Roman and I have been getting right into smoothies lately and have been enjoying them for breakfast. We change it up everyday, depending what fruit is in the fridge.Smoothies are great for babies. They can learn how to use a straw, or a spoon, or a cup and have lots of fun making a mess when it ends up all over the highchair tray! At first Roman loved sipping them with the ...

Lemon Curd

January 13, 2012 by Abby 2 Comments

Lemon Curd is delicious on all sorts of things. Toast, waffles, crepes, sandwiched between 2 layers of cake...the list goes on. It's easy to make and this recipe is simpler than a lot of others as it doesn't use a double boiler. It keeps well in a sterilised jar and even freezes pretty well. I think it loses a little bit of it's silkiness, but nothing major. It also makes a ...

Hooded Sweatshirt into a Zip Up – Tutorial

January 10, 2012 by Abby 16 Comments

I have this hoodie that I'm quite attached to. It's nothing special, but I feel so nice and cosy inside it. The problem is, I don't really wear it because it's a bit tight around my hips. Well I solved that problem by cutting it up the middle and adding a zip! Now it's a zip up hoodie that I can wear un-zipped or zipped up (the zip adds a tiny bit extra to the width of the ...

Secret pyjamas! My dress for this year's @sew_melb Secret pyjamas! My dress for this year's @sew_melbourne garden party was the Charlie Caftan by @closetcorepatterns. I shortened it at the shoulders by an inch and think I shortened it at the bottom too. I altered the pockets so they attach into the waist panel, because I hate when in-seam pockets flap about and pull at the side seams. The side slits are a double turn narrow hem as the overlock and turn as suggested in the pattern looked puckered. The fabric is a Cotton + Steel rayon by Masaru Suzuki, which is a dream to sew with. I've made another dress in the red colour way.
Beans from the garden and my favourite way to eat Beans from the garden and my favourite way to eat them... Stir fry in hot oil (coconut is delish but whatever you have is fine) until a bit burnt (about 5 mins). Chuck in a few squirts of fish sauce for the last 5 secs and toss through.
Give them a minute to cool if you can lest you burn your mouth.

A new hat! I used the free #closetcoresunhat. I've A new hat! I used the free #closetcoresunhat. I've added a hair hole, since why don't all hats have that?! Also added some garden wire to the brim. Instead of finishing the brim edge with bias, I did the usual RST stitch, fold and top stitch. That means the brim is a little shorter than the pattern. I wanted to keep the hat lightweight, so it's unlined and has only the two layers of canvas fabric for the brim. The cotton canvas is a vintage fabric from my stash, which originally cost 15 shillings and 9 pence (I think) per yard.
