Stamped Wooden Chopping Board – Attempt 1

June 25, 2012 by Abby 7 Comments

This is a bit of a craft fail, but seeing as we all have them, I thought I'd show it to you all in case someone out there ever tries to do this too! Hopefully I'll save you the trouble.I have a very good sense of smell. I call it my 'Super Nose'. Having a really good sense of smell and taste can be great when I'm at a restaurant and want to figure out what's in my dinner so I ...

Getting Shoe Polish Out of Carpet

May 29, 2012 by Abby 1 Comment

I took my boots to the cobbler the other day (anyone else think of Karl Pilkington when they hear 'cobbler'?) to get the soles re-done. I picked them up looking shiny and new and took them home. I put them on this morning when I got up and 5 minutes later noticed a few horse shoe shaped marks all over the carpet. Not impressed! It's nice when the guy polishes your shoes after ...

Fun with Stop Motion Animation

March 12, 2012 by Abby 7 Comments

Hubby is between jobs at the moment, so we've been having fun making a stop motion animation with some Lego over the last few days. To make the stop motion, we took a heap of pictures with the digital camera and then put them all together into a video using Windows Live Movie Maker. This would be a fun weekend activity to involve older kids in. Keep in mind, that it can ...

Waste not, want not – Spring Onions for Free

February 10, 2012 by Abby 5 Comments

I feel like a bit of a chump for not trying this sooner. All the times I've thrown out the bottoms of my Spring Onions when I could have been growing new ones for nothing! I thought that this must be a myth I've heard, but it was no effort to test out and I'm so glad I did. Also, why do these little things have so many names? Scallions, spring onions, green onions, ...

T-Shirt Shopping Bag

January 21, 2012 by Abby 9 Comments

I always have a reusable shopping bag in the bottom of my handbag. The one I've been using finally died, so I made up a new one from an old t-shirt.This is really simple and quick and a great way to give new life to an old t-shirt. The jersey makes the bag nice and stretchy so you can fit a lot into them too.T-shirt Shopping BagYou'll need:An old t-shirt (or a new one)Sewing ...

DIY Sugar Scrub: Great for mechanics

January 7, 2012 by Abby 28 Comments

My brother is a mechanic and all-round handy guy, so often has grubby hands. I made up a pot of this to give to him for Christmas. It's lovely and moisturising for hard working, dry hands. It's great to use after a day gardening, cleaning or even packing (I always find my hands get really dirty and dried out packing boxes). The sugar scrubs off all the muck, and the honey and ...

Glitter Letters

December 13, 2011 by Abby 1 Comment

Well, I'm now past the half way mark and pretty surprised I've managed to keep up all the Christmas posts. Roman has a cold and a new crop of teeth coming through this week :( He likes to get them in batches, which means we don't get a lot of sleep during the weeks he gets new teeth. I'm being very productive in my down time though, and these festive crafts are lots of fun. ...

Tefal Fresh Express Review

November 29, 2011 by Abby 2 Comments

I've had a few chances to play with the Tefal Fresh Express now, so I feel qualified to put up a review on it. I've taken a few videos so you can see it in action. I was too embarrassed to talk on it (who doesn't hate the sound of their own voice), but you get the idea. I had a few people around for some chicken fajitas so this was the perfect chance to cut up some different ...

Cutlery Storage Roll – Tutorial

November 22, 2011 by Abby 18 Comments

Do you have one of those 'good' cutlery sets? You know the ones, they get pulled out for Christmas and then for the rest of the year, take up a huge amount of space in an awkwardly large box.Well, I decided to store them in a roll, like chefs knives. They take up a lot less space and still stay nice and shiny. You can see below, that they use about 1/4 of the space of the box. ...

Cleaning my Stove Burners – no scrubbing required!

October 29, 2011 by Abby 3 Comments

I'm almost embarrassed to post this. My stove burners get pretty dirty. I guess I think life is too short to be scrubbing the grease off the stove burners, but now that I know this trick, I don't need to. All you need is a little bit of Ammonia and a zip-loc bag. Get a zip-loc bag and put your dirty stove burners in there. I did two at a time so that I could still use the ...

Get Organised – Laundry Storage and Dusting mittens

October 24, 2011 by Abby 1 Comment

Being renters, we can't put any shelves up and the laundry at out house is a bit lacking in storage. I came across these little baskets at the local discount store and they are perfect! They have 2 suction cups on the back, so they stick to the tiles, and I can take them with me when we move out. The one on the left has my delicates bags in it and the one on the right is ...

Quick and satisfying project today making a brush Quick and satisfying project today making a brush roll for my art supplies. Vintage canvas from the stash (which I think is from a bougie Italian designer). Matching bag to come. Then I can grab and go for my next en plein air session.
I love how gardening teaches you to appreciate eac I love how gardening teaches you to appreciate each season and observe the cyclical nature of growth and of life. Through tending a garden we learn to embrace imperfection and patience. That the reason for everything is the journey not the destination.
My dress for this years @sew_melbourne Garden Part My dress for this years @sew_melbourne Garden Party was the Lucca Dress from @schultzapparel. I adore the 18th Century vibe! After toiling my measured size, I ended up going down 2 sizes and after a few minor tweaks I make to most patterns (shorten and move forward the shoulder and realign the side seams) it was good to go. I was planning to finish the front with eyelets but ended up hand sewing in hook and eye tape. I love the clean look! When trying it on I wanted a little more oomph in the hips so I added some tulle hip pads to the sides. I added in seam pockets too because...pockets! The fabric is from deep stash and originally purchased at the Philips Shirt Factory sale in the city maybe 10 years ago?! It was a dream to sew with! I used about 5m because it was only 90cm wide. I'm loving the result and hopefully the weather plays nice and I get another chance to wear it before it turns cold. The dipped waist makes it really comfortable to wear with room for a big lunch! #schlucca #sewmelbourne #sewmelbournegp #imakemyownclothes
My grandma always grew borage and would put it in My grandma always grew borage and would put it in salads. I didn't know anyone else who made salad with flowers in it (it was the 80s) and I thought she was a magical witch. I'm so excited to finally grow it in my own garden! When buying veggie seeds I found borage on @theseedcollection so couldn't help myself. Witches unite! ✨🌱
Today Ted and I built a step to make getting up to Today Ted and I built a step to make getting up to front garden a bit easier. Used scraps of timber from the old retaining wall. He wasn't a fan of the circular saw but loved doing the drilling and screwing. Worked out just as I hoped! I don't have a builders square, but turns out a quilting ruler makes an excellent substitute.
