Tag Cube Soft Toy – Tutorial

August 4, 2011 by Abby 11 Comments

This quick little toy can be whipped up in under an hour with some scraps of fabric and ribbon. The only other thing you need is some hobbyfill (stuffing). I chose ribbon and fabric with different textures and patterns to make it more interesting to play with. It would also be cool to put a rattle or bell in the middle of this...next time!(The product tester)Taggie ToyYou'll ...

Custom Sized Fitted Sheets – Tutorial

July 21, 2011 by Abby 16 Comments

For some reason, fitted cot sheets do not fit the mattress in Roman's cot. Not the standard ones, not the ones for cot beds, nothing. Luckily for me, they're easy to make. I had an old queen size flat sheet kicking about, and managed to get 2 cot sheets out of it. Given that I also had the elastic, this was a free project. This is a formula, so that you can use this for any ...

Mini Savoury Muffins and my rave about Baby-Led Weaning

July 14, 2011 by Abby 47 Comments

We've basically been following the ideas behind baby-led weaning and I'm loving it! Getting Roman to sleep for every nap and every night is a total battle, so it's nice to be able to sit back and let him take the lead with his meals. The main idea with baby-led weaning is to give your baby a choice of healthy things to eat and let them pick them up, smoosh them around and ...

Practical tips for new Grandmothers

July 11, 2011 by Abby 3 Comments

(Greg's mother, me and Roman out in the London snow)Grandmothers are great and the hubby and I would certainly have not survived our first few months with Roman without help from both of our mothers, but sometimes there are some things I wish they could remember from their time as a new parent. With that in mind, I thought I would make a list so I can remember this myself if I ...

Free Knitting Pattern: Simple Knitted Beanie

July 5, 2011 by Abby 49 Comments

I knitted this beanie originally for the hubby, but it's a bit short and doesn't cover his ears. With the edge folded over, it fits Roman perfectly. It's nice and stretchy and will fit for many years to come. This simple knitted beanie was a quick make and I whipped it up on a 4hr car trip. It's pretty much one size fits all, as long as you use a nice stretchy yarn. You can ...

Secret pyjamas! My dress for this year's @sew_melb Secret pyjamas! My dress for this year's @sew_melbourne garden party was the Charlie Caftan by @closetcorepatterns. I shortened it at the shoulders by an inch and think I shortened it at the bottom too. I altered the pockets so they attach into the waist panel, because I hate when in-seam pockets flap about and pull at the side seams. The side slits are a double turn narrow hem as the overlock and turn as suggested in the pattern looked puckered. The fabric is a Cotton + Steel rayon by Masaru Suzuki, which is a dream to sew with. I've made another dress in the red colour way.
Beans from the garden and my favourite way to eat Beans from the garden and my favourite way to eat them... Stir fry in hot oil (coconut is delish but whatever you have is fine) until a bit burnt (about 5 mins). Chuck in a few squirts of fish sauce for the last 5 secs and toss through.
Give them a minute to cool if you can lest you burn your mouth.

A new hat! I used the free #closetcoresunhat. I've A new hat! I used the free #closetcoresunhat. I've added a hair hole, since why don't all hats have that?! Also added some garden wire to the brim. Instead of finishing the brim edge with bias, I did the usual RST stitch, fold and top stitch. That means the brim is a little shorter than the pattern. I wanted to keep the hat lightweight, so it's unlined and has only the two layers of canvas fabric for the brim. The cotton canvas is a vintage fabric from my stash, which originally cost 15 shillings and 9 pence (I think) per yard.
