Oliver + S Bucket Hat – Pattern Review

January 27, 2012 by Abby 29 Comments

August 2019 - It appears this pattern is no longer available for free download. This is the first Oliver + S pattern I have tried out and I love it! It is well written, easy to understand and makes a great finished product that is true to size. It's funny that I say true to size, I actually had to make the size 3 - 5 years, even though Roman is only 15 months. That is because ...

Smoothie Time!

January 15, 2012 by Abby 1 Comment

Roman and I have been getting right into smoothies lately and have been enjoying them for breakfast. We change it up everyday, depending what fruit is in the fridge.Smoothies are great for babies. They can learn how to use a straw, or a spoon, or a cup and have lots of fun making a mess when it ends up all over the highchair tray! At first Roman loved sipping them with the ...

Zucchini Slice

November 27, 2011 by Abby 6 Comments

Would you believe I've never actually made Zucchini Slice before? As a kid, it was not something my Mum ever made, so it's not something that comes to mind. I think I've been missing out though, as this was one of the easiest things to make and was super tasty. Roman loves it too. I left out the cheese as hubby doesn't eat it (I swear it's his only flaw) and it was still very ...

Cot Rail Teething Guard – Tutorial

November 13, 2011 by Abby 5 Comments

Roman's cot has teething rails...along the sides only! It didn't take him long to figure this out, so he chews on the ends. I made up some teething rail guards so he can chew on those instead. They are simply some rectangles with straps on the sides that snap onto the back to hold the guards in place. I made them out of a cute cotton print, also used on the sleeping ...

I'm an Aunty! Julia Lily was born last Friday and I'm totally smittern. Mother and baby are doing very well and we're all so excited to have a new baby in the family. I lasted about 5 minutes from first hearing the news to starting to decorate the little onesie above. Roman’s Smash Cake Session

November 9, 2011 by Abby 3 Comments

On the weekend, we did a Smash Cake session for Roman's 1st Birthday. For those of you unfamiliar with the term, a Smash Cake is a cake made just for the baby. They get to squash it, poke it, eat it and play with it...all in the name of fun! The idea is to take a heap of photos and I think it's a great way of capturing a baby's 1st Birthday. The day before we planned to do it, ...

Sugar-free Carrot and Date Cake

November 9, 2011 by Abby 83 Comments

I'm in two minds about using sugar in a cake made specifically for a baby. On the one hand, it's their birthday, and the only time they have cake, so a little bit of sugar isn't going to do any harm. But on the other hand, they're a baby, they don't need, want or crave the sugar so why get them hooked on it? I think this cake is a perfect compromise. The dates are nice and ...

To Grandma’s House We Go!

November 5, 2011 by Abby 3 Comments

Earlier in the week, we all hopped into the car and went up to visit my Grandparents. The last time I saw them was as Roman's Christening...far too long ago!Like many grandmas, she's a fantastic knitter, and Roman was lucky enough to receive a blanket she knitted for him. I love the bright colours and it's nice and big so will be great for when he's in a big boy bed. The ...

Sunny Felt Mobile

November 3, 2011 by Abby 5 Comments

My sister in law is due any day and I have a million ideas for things to make for the baby. I have real trouble picking what to actually make, but knew I wanted to do a mobile. I liked the idea of the happy little sun looking over the baby, so played around until I was happy with it. The sun, clouds and raindrops are made out of felt and I embroidered the face on the sun by ...

How to Sew a Baby Sleeping Bag – Tutorial

October 31, 2011 by Abby 25 Comments

Roman was in need of some light-weight sleeping bags for the warmer weather. Having a look at the ones in the shops, I decided that it would be easy enough, and a lot cheaper to make them up myself. I've used cotton jersey for the lining and a cotton print for the outer. From my research, this is equivalent to 1.0 tog, which is good for most summer use. You could also make this ...

Happy 1st Birthday Roman

October 27, 2011 by Abby 1 Comment

Well it's been quite a year. There has been not a lot of sleep, quite a few tears and many dirty nappies. But there has also been many smiles, laughs and much joy as we've been our little baby grow into a cheeky boy. I love you with every fibre of my being and you make me unbelievably happy. Your smile warms my heart like nothing else. Happy Birthday Roman!xx ...

Pumpkin and Poppy Seed Mini Muffins

October 20, 2011 by Abby 6 Comments

I made these up using the Mini Savoury Muffins base and added some grated pumpkin and sprinkled the tops with poppy seeds. I left the cheese out  from the original recipe because I didn't have any. Like everything, Roman loves them. Pumpkin and Poppy Seed Mini Muffins makes 24 2 cups (300g) plain flour 1 tbsp baking powder 2 eggs 1/4 cup olive oil 1/2 cup milk 2 ...

A new hat! I used the free #closetcoresunhat. I've A new hat! I used the free #closetcoresunhat. I've added a hair hole, since why don't all hats have that?! Also added some garden wire to the brim. Instead of finishing the brim edge with bias, I did the usual RST stitch, fold and top stitch. That means the brim is a little shorter than the pattern. I wanted to keep the hat lightweight, so it's unlined and has only the two layers of canvas fabric for the brim. The cotton canvas is a vintage fabric from my stash, which originally cost 15 shillings and 9 pence (I think) per yard.

Quick and satisfying project today making a brush Quick and satisfying project today making a brush roll for my art supplies. Vintage canvas from the stash (which I think is from a bougie Italian designer). Matching bag to come. Then I can grab and go for my next en plein air session.

Through tending a garden we learn to embrace imperfection and patience. That the reason for everything is the journey not the destination.
My dress for this years @sew_melbourne Garden Part My dress for this years @sew_melbourne Garden Party was the Lucca Dress from @schultzapparel. I adore the 18th Century vibe! After toiling my measured size, I ended up going down 2 sizes and after a few minor tweaks I make to most patterns (shorten and move forward the shoulder and realign the side seams) it was good to go. I was planning to finish the front with eyelets but ended up hand sewing in hook and eye tape. I love the clean look! When trying it on I wanted a little more oomph in the hips so I added some tulle hip pads to the sides. I added in seam pockets too because...pockets! The fabric is from deep stash and originally purchased at the Philips Shirt Factory sale in the city maybe 10 years ago?! It was a dream to sew with! I used about 5m because it was only 90cm wide. I'm loving the result and hopefully the weather plays nice and I get another chance to wear it before it turns cold. The dipped waist makes it really comfortable to wear with room for a big lunch! #schlucca #sewmelbourne #sewmelbournegp #imakemyownclothes
