Peppermint Schnapps

Peppermint Schnapps

Day 10 of my 12 days of Christmas…and time for a drink! Peppermint Schnapps is a lovely and refreshing aperitif and makes a nice, home made Christmas gift. I can’t figure out if there is a difference between Peppermint Schnapps and Creme de Menthe, but I don’t think it matters.

This recipe is made using grain spirit. It’s also known as Polish spirit or Everclear. You can also find recipes to make schnapps using vodka.

A shot is lovely in your coffee, hot chocolate, eggnog or over ice cream. I’ve also got a few cocktail recipes down the bottom that use Peppermint Schnapps.

Peppermint Schnapps
makes about 1 litre

2.5 cups sugar
2.5 cups water
2/3 cup 96% grain spirit
3 tsp peppermint extract
green colouring (optional)

Heat sugar and water over gentle heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Cool to room temperature. Stir in alcohol and peppermint extract. Add green food colouring if desired. Add a little at a time, until you reach the colour you’re after. I like to separate the schnapps into two batches and leave one white, and colour one green.

It tastes best when left to mature for about 2 weeks (so I’ve been told, I never wait that long)

Mint Chip
1/2 shot Peppermint Schnapps
1/2 Kahlua
Coke (optional)

Pour Schnapps and Kahlua over ice and stir. Top up with Coke if desired.

Peppermint Kiss
1/2 shot Peppermint Schnapps
Champagne

Pour Schnapps into a champagne flute. Fill with champagne or sparkling wine. Garnish with a small candy cane.

Icy Apple Martini
1 part  Vodka
1/2 part Sour Apple Schnapps
1/2 part Peppermint Schnapps

Mix ingredients in a shaker with ice. Strain into a martini glass and garnish with a slice of apple.

@Amanda – It’s the bottle from some cheap balsamic vinegar at the supermarket. It was discontinued, so was $1 a bottle. I now have a lifetime supply of balsamic in a coke bottle.

Secret pyjamas! My dress for this year's @sew_melb Secret pyjamas! My dress for this year's @sew_melbourne garden party was the Charlie Caftan by @closetcorepatterns. I shortened it at the shoulders by an inch and think I shortened it at the bottom too. I altered the pockets so they attach into the waist panel, because I hate when in-seam pockets flap about and pull at the side seams. The side slits are a double turn narrow hem as the overlock and turn as suggested in the pattern looked puckered. The fabric is a Cotton + Steel rayon by Masaru Suzuki, which is a dream to sew with. I've made another dress in the red colour way.
Beans from the garden and my favourite way to eat Beans from the garden and my favourite way to eat them... Stir fry in hot oil (coconut is delish but whatever you have is fine) until a bit burnt (about 5 mins). Chuck in a few squirts of fish sauce for the last 5 secs and toss through.
Give them a minute to cool if you can lest you burn your mouth.

A new hat! I used the free #closetcoresunhat. I've A new hat! I used the free #closetcoresunhat. I've added a hair hole, since why don't all hats have that?! Also added some garden wire to the brim. Instead of finishing the brim edge with bias, I did the usual RST stitch, fold and top stitch. That means the brim is a little shorter than the pattern. I wanted to keep the hat lightweight, so it's unlined and has only the two layers of canvas fabric for the brim. The cotton canvas is a vintage fabric from my stash, which originally cost 15 shillings and 9 pence (I think) per yard.
