Selfish Sewing Week Wrap Up

September 29, 2013 by Abby 10 Comments

Selfish Sewing Week I’m a bit sad that Selfish Sewing Week is over already. Thank you so much to Rachael and Jill for hosting the series. It was so nice to make some things for myself and I can’t tell you how excited I am to have some new clothes in my wardrobe. I haven’t really been shopping since before I was pregnant with Roman! That’s like 4 years ago! I got a lot more done this week than I thought I would and I feel totally set for the warmer weather now. Big T Nursing TopBig T Nursing Top I’ve been wearing my Big T Feeding Top so much, that I decided to whip up another one. This one is made from a tissue knit with little silver polka dots on it. Again, I went with the tunic length on it…I really love tops this length. They’re perfect for chucking on over a pair of leggings! Colette SorbettoColette Sorbetto Making the Colette Sorbetto has really sold me on the effort it takes to do a muslin first. I’m so happy with the fit…though I think I might lower the neckline some more. I can’t believe I cut into my Caesar Liberty Lawn too, it was my favourite piece in my stash. I was so scared, but I’m glad I did. Because, I tell you what’s better than staring at lush fabric in your stash? Wearing it all day and catching it every time you go past a mirror! I must thank hubby for taking all these dorky pictures of me. It was quite a windy day…not the best for relaxing on the balcony. Ok, time to go and clean the house after neglecting it all week 😉

I’m so impressed. I’ve had a massive week with family staying (hosting 10 people in my tiny little house is rather stressful). Hoping to sew something in the next couple of weeks – just for me!

Great job!! All the pieces look great, and cutting into Liberty Lawn really paid off, it’s gorgeous!! I wanted to ask you about the muslin, does it have to be the same weight as the fabric you are planning on using for the actual piece?

The muslin doesn’t HAVE to be the same weight fabric, though it does help. The one I used for mine was slightly heavier-weight than the lawn. More like a quilting cotton. I had it laying about though and couldn’t be bothered going to get more fabric. The more ‘drape’ your finished item has, the more critical it is that the muslin fabric is similar weight so you can get an idea of the finished look.

Selfish sewing is such a great idea. Mum’s wants often tend to be at the bottom of the pile. You have some great new additions to your wardrobe. Well done.

I’m in love with this length of the Big T. So becoming! I might even wear it with leggings as you suggest even though I’m not really the leggings-type. In combo with this though, I totally see it.

My dress for this years @sew_melbourne Garden Part My dress for this years @sew_melbourne Garden Party was the Lucca Dress from @schultzapparel. I adore the 18th Century vibe! After toiling my measured size, I ended up going down 2 sizes and after a few minor tweaks I make to most patterns (shorten and move forward the shoulder and realign the side seams) it was good to go. I was planning to finish the front with eyelets but ended up hand sewing in hook and eye tape. I love the clean look! When trying it on I wanted a little more oomph in the hips so I added some tulle hip pads to the sides. I added in seam pockets too because...pockets! The fabric is from deep stash and originally purchased at the Philips Shirt Factory sale in the city maybe 10 years ago?! It was a dream to sew with! I used about 5m because it was only 90cm wide. I'm loving the result and hopefully the weather plays nice and I get another chance to wear it before it turns cold. The dipped waist makes it really comfortable to wear with room for a big lunch! #schlucca #sewmelbourne #sewmelbournegp #imakemyownclothes
My grandma always grew borage and would put it in My grandma always grew borage and would put it in salads. I didn't know anyone else who made salad with flowers in it (it was the 80s) and I thought she was a magical witch. I'm so excited to finally grow it in my own garden! When buying veggie seeds I found borage on @theseedcollection so couldn't help myself. Witches unite! ✨🌱
Today Ted and I built a step to make getting up to Today Ted and I built a step to make getting up to front garden a bit easier. Used scraps of timber from the old retaining wall. He wasn't a fan of the circular saw but loved doing the drilling and screwing. Worked out just as I hoped! I don't have a builders square, but turns out a quilting ruler makes an excellent substitute.
