Meal Planning Ideas: Dinner Lucky Dip

March 6, 2014 by Abby 10 Comments

Meal Planning: Dinner Lucky Dip

Picking what’s for dinner would have to be one of my least favourite jobs! Hubby and I can waste a whole hour just deciding what our meals are for the week. It’s not meant to be so difficult! One of us came up with the idea of these meal sticks, or dinner lucky dip as we like to call it.

The idea is pretty simple. All of the things we like to cook for dinner are written on the sticks and when we can’t think of what to have for dinner, out comes the jar! I’ve written one suggestion on each side of the stick and tried to split them into warm weather and cool weather meals. If the first suggestion doesn’t take your fancy, flip the stick over and check out the other one, or pull out another stick.

The jar lives on the window sill in the kitchen and I’ve got a pile of blank sticks in the drawer so that I can easily add to the jar if I come across a new recipe to add into the rotation.

Meal Planning: Dinner Lucky Dip

I managed to come up with 40 different meals to write on the sticks. The lucky dip has really helped make weekly meal planning easier for us. What tricks do you have for planning your weekly meals?

I LOVE THIS IDEA!!! I’m going home tonight to make a lucky dip jar too. Might even do too – a kids dinner lucky dip and an adults only lucky dip. Sometimes I like to have something a little more special for hubby and I rather than a ‘family’ meal.

    Awesome idea Abby

I can’t bear to even imagine…Roman is plenty opinionated and he’s only 3.5! I better start stockpiling wine.

Love this! I might do it too – the kids would get a kick out of choosing the dinners. Might make them more inclined to eat it, they’ve been fussy lately!

Thanks for this great idea! I use a fruit- and vegetable calendar, to check which fruits and vegetables suits the season whe are in. This helps a little when choosing what to eat. But your idea is the best! 😉

I should try and do that. Australians in general are not very good at eating seasonally.

Through tending a garden we learn to embrace imperfection and patience. That the reason for everything is the journey not the destination.
My dress for this years @sew_melbourne Garden Part My dress for this years @sew_melbourne Garden Party was the Lucca Dress from @schultzapparel. I adore the 18th Century vibe! After toiling my measured size, I ended up going down 2 sizes and after a few minor tweaks I make to most patterns (shorten and move forward the shoulder and realign the side seams) it was good to go. I was planning to finish the front with eyelets but ended up hand sewing in hook and eye tape. I love the clean look! When trying it on I wanted a little more oomph in the hips so I added some tulle hip pads to the sides. I added in seam pockets too because...pockets! The fabric is from deep stash and originally purchased at the Philips Shirt Factory sale in the city maybe 10 years ago?! It was a dream to sew with! I used about 5m because it was only 90cm wide. I'm loving the result and hopefully the weather plays nice and I get another chance to wear it before it turns cold. The dipped waist makes it really comfortable to wear with room for a big lunch! #schlucca #sewmelbourne #sewmelbournegp #imakemyownclothes
My grandma always grew borage and would put it in My grandma always grew borage and would put it in salads. I didn't know anyone else who made salad with flowers in it (it was the 80s) and I thought she was a magical witch. I'm so excited to finally grow it in my own garden! When buying veggie seeds I found borage on @theseedcollection so couldn't help myself. Witches unite! ✨🌱
Today Ted and I built a step to make getting up to Today Ted and I built a step to make getting up to front garden a bit easier. Used scraps of timber from the old retaining wall. He wasn't a fan of the circular saw but loved doing the drilling and screwing. Worked out just as I hoped! I don't have a builders square, but turns out a quilting ruler makes an excellent substitute.
