Boys Summer Pyjamas

February 28, 2014 by Abby 12 Comments

Firetruck Pyjamas

It feels like summer is on it’s way out already, so I think I got these finished just in time!

My lovely sponsors at Sew Creative Supplies provided the fabric and thread for this project. The fabric is Michael Miller Vintage Fire Trucks. Roman picked it out and I was a little surprised when it arrived as the fire engines are a lot bigger than I was expecting! My own fault for not looking at the picture properly.

Can I just point out my freakin’ awesome pattern matching on the shirt front?! One of the things I love about making clothes is being able to take the time to do something like that. It really makes the pajamas look that much better.

This was my first time working with Rasant thread and I was really impressed. The thread seems less fluffy and finer than Gutermann, which I usually work with. I’ve been having a lot of fluff problems with Gutermann lately. I never used to notice it, so I wonder if they’ve changed manufacturers?

The pattern is from the book, The Perfect Pyjama (affiliate link). You can tell from the pictures in the book that the patterns are generously sized. For this reason, I made these up in size 2-3, but with the 4-5 length. Even still, they have plenty of growing room and I think that even though Roman is 3 1/2 now, he should still get another summer out of them.

The book has lots of variations on a few basic patterns and some of the women’s patterns look lovely. I found the instructions in the book pretty light on, so if you were new to sewing, I think you’d struggle to put these together. If you’ve done a bit of garment sewing, you’d be fine.

I added snaps instead of buttons, 1 because they’re quicker to attach (yay for no buttonholes) and 2 because Roman can dress himself, which we are both pretty happy about. They look so cute on him, but I don’t think I’m sold on making real pyjamas. I found them so much slower to make than knit ones. I think it’s all the extra work for the collar. Do you prefer traditional pjs or knit tshirt style ones on your kids?

These action shots are pretty terrible, but no means of bribe would get him to sit still for long enough so excuse the props and bed hair.

Love the pattern matching! He is such a cutie. Snaps to dress himself = win. I need to remember that.

LOVE these, though I know the collar would put me off. I found a collarless PJ pattern I use now and love it kind of like a baseball jersey? And no collar makes it unisex too for our mix of genders 😉 I like knit for cooler weather but cotton is much nicer for summer with my hot sleepers.

Collarless is a great idea! The book did include a tunic style top as well. I’ve got hot little sleepers here too. Roman wakes up with a wet pillow from his nap.

Quick and satisfying project today making a brush Quick and satisfying project today making a brush roll for my art supplies. Vintage canvas from the stash (which I think is from a bougie Italian designer). Matching bag to come. Then I can grab and go for my next en plein air session.

My dress for this years @sew_melbourne Garden Part My dress for this years @sew_melbourne Garden Party was the Lucca Dress from @schultzapparel. I adore the 18th Century vibe! After toiling my measured size, I ended up going down 2 sizes and after a few minor tweaks I make to most patterns (shorten and move forward the shoulder and realign the side seams) it was good to go. I was planning to finish the front with eyelets but ended up hand sewing in hook and eye tape. I love the clean look! When trying it on I wanted a little more oomph in the hips so I added some tulle hip pads to the sides. I added in seam pockets too because...pockets! The fabric is from deep stash and originally purchased at the Philips Shirt Factory sale in the city maybe 10 years ago?! It was a dream to sew with! I used about 5m because it was only 90cm wide. I'm loving the result and hopefully the weather plays nice and I get another chance to wear it before it turns cold. The dipped waist makes it really comfortable to wear with room for a big lunch! #schlucca #sewmelbourne #sewmelbournegp #imakemyownclothes
My grandma always grew borage and would put it in My grandma always grew borage and would put it in salads. I didn't know anyone else who made salad with flowers in it (it was the 80s) and I thought she was a magical witch. I'm so excited to finally grow it in my own garden! When buying veggie seeds I found borage on @theseedcollection so couldn't help myself. Witches unite! ✨🌱
Today Ted and I built a step to make getting up to Today Ted and I built a step to make getting up to front garden a bit easier. Used scraps of timber from the old retaining wall. He wasn't a fan of the circular saw but loved doing the drilling and screwing. Worked out just as I hoped! I don't have a builders square, but turns out a quilting ruler makes an excellent substitute.
