Vegan Apple Cake

March 26, 2013 by Abby 3 Comments

No one in our household is Vegan, but we do follow Lent before Easter and Christmas, so egg-free and dairy-free recipes come in handy. I often bake this Vegan Chocolate Cake, but sometimes it's nice to mix it up a bit. Apple and Cinnamon is a classic combination, although you could leave the cinnamon out if you're not a fan. This recipe is based on this one from Cake Duchess, ...

White Chocolate and Raspberry Cheesecake

March 18, 2013 by Abby 9 Comments

I've had a craving for cheesecake lately, so I used the excuse of having some family over for dinner to make one. I like chilled cheesecakes because they're not as rich, so you can eat a second piece and because they don't have the stress of baking and potential cracks. I don't think I've ever actually made a baked cheesecake, all the rules have scared me off! This recipe is ...

Crab Balls with Asian Noodle Salad

March 13, 2013 by Abby Leave a Comment

It has been crazy hot in Melbourne! Too hot to sew, too hot to cook, which is why the blog has been a little quiet. We are on track to have 10 days in a row over 30°C. I must say right now I'm missing the air-conditioning from the old house, but the pool makes up for it. I've also been putting my heat pack in the freezer and resting on my forehead at night. It definitely helps ...

Coconut Cardamom Barfi

February 16, 2013 by Abby 3 Comments

Hubby and I were watching an old episode of Food Safari and they cooked up a batch of these sweet little Indian treats. They looked so easy and delicious that I made them up the next week to take to a BBQ. All you need is a saucepan, which worked well for me as most of my kitchen was in boxes at the time. Coconut Cardamom Barfi makes about 40 200g desiccated coconut* 50g ...

Banana and Walnut Loaf

February 8, 2013 by Abby 3 Comments

About 18 months ago, hubby had to go on a business trip to the US. With a very unsettled baby permanently attached to my hip, I decided I wasn't going to miss out on the fun AND be on my own with Roman, so we went too! While we were in Seattle, I got a bit obsessed with the Starbuck's Banana Bread. This recipe is meant to be the same, although I can't quite remember what the ...

Pan Coat Cake Release – my Baking Secret

January 27, 2013 by Abby 12 Comments

I first learnt about this stuff years ago. As a teenager, I was a bit obsessed with wedding cakes (I have no idea why) and borrowed all the books in the library to do with cake decorating. I'd flick through the pages for hours looking at the pretty cakes and how to make the little sugar flowers. I can't remember where I first came across the idea of 'Pan Coat' but I feel like ...

Snickers Ice Cream

January 21, 2013 by Abby 3 Comments

I've always wondered why anyone would buy a Mars Bar when a Snickers is soooo much better. Unless of course you are allergic to nuts. Anyway... peanuts, caramel and chocolate make a great flavour combination for Ice Cream, not just chocolate bars. Here's my recipe for Snickers in Ice Cream form! It's a pimped-up version of my Peanut Butter Ice Cream with Oreo Chunks This ...

Cherry Frozen Yogurt

January 12, 2013 by Abby 2 Comments

I have had this recipe book-marked for a very long time, I'm guessing about 5 years, so it was about time I actually made it! This is based on the recipe for Coconut Pinkcherry Yogurt from Smitten Kitchen. The only thing I've really changed is to use Coconut Cream instead of Coconut Milk because I didn't have any on hand. It doesn't really add any coconut flavour just a ...

Broccoli Pasta

January 3, 2013 by Abby 1 Comment

It sounds weird if you've never tried it, but broccoli is great with pasta. I quite like broccoli and we eat it a fair bit, with hubby, Roman and I all fighting over who gets to eat the raw 'trunk'. This is a great pantry dinner as I usually have all the ingredients lying about. I like using wholemeal spiral pasta for this because it cooks really fast, but it also works with ...

Chocolate Peppermint Crinkle Cookies

December 22, 2012 by Abby 2 Comments

Well this is my last recipe for 'A Very Cookie Christmas'. I've had lots of fun baking and testing all the different cookies and I hope you've enjoyed them too. If you've made up a batch, please leave a comment or post a message on the Facebook page and let me know. I'd love to know what you've made. I love these cookies! They're crunchy on the outside, but chewy and fudgy ...

Cookie Puzzle

December 18, 2012 by Abby 8 Comments

I've been so inspired by Laura's amazing decorated cookies (here and here) during this series, that I thought I would give it a go myself. I've never decorated cookies before, (I know?! I think I'm the only one) but in the middle of the night I got the idea for a Cookie Puzzle and had to give it a go! This makes a fun little gift, just make sure that if your cookies feel ...

Savoury Seedy Snaps

December 14, 2012 by Abby Leave a Comment

I thought you might be getting overloaded with sugar from all these cookies, so today I've got a recipe for some Savoury Crackers for you. I loved watching the latest season of The Great British Bake Off and that is where this recipe is adapted from. Hubby and I have to watch it with snacks on hand because we get very hungry watching it. The original recipe uses 3/4tsp of ...

Quick and satisfying project today making a brush Quick and satisfying project today making a brush roll for my art supplies. Vintage canvas from the stash (which I think is from a bougie Italian designer). Matching bag to come. Then I can grab and go for my next en plein air session.
I love how gardening teaches you to appreciate eac I love how gardening teaches you to appreciate each season and observe the cyclical nature of growth and of life. Through tending a garden we learn to embrace imperfection and patience. That the reason for everything is the journey not the destination.
My dress for this years @sew_melbourne Garden Part My dress for this years @sew_melbourne Garden Party was the Lucca Dress from @schultzapparel. I adore the 18th Century vibe! After toiling my measured size, I ended up going down 2 sizes and after a few minor tweaks I make to most patterns (shorten and move forward the shoulder and realign the side seams) it was good to go. I was planning to finish the front with eyelets but ended up hand sewing in hook and eye tape. I love the clean look! When trying it on I wanted a little more oomph in the hips so I added some tulle hip pads to the sides. I added in seam pockets too because...pockets! The fabric is from deep stash and originally purchased at the Philips Shirt Factory sale in the city maybe 10 years ago?! It was a dream to sew with! I used about 5m because it was only 90cm wide. I'm loving the result and hopefully the weather plays nice and I get another chance to wear it before it turns cold. The dipped waist makes it really comfortable to wear with room for a big lunch! #schlucca #sewmelbourne #sewmelbournegp #imakemyownclothes
My grandma always grew borage and would put it in My grandma always grew borage and would put it in salads. I didn't know anyone else who made salad with flowers in it (it was the 80s) and I thought she was a magical witch. I'm so excited to finally grow it in my own garden! When buying veggie seeds I found borage on @theseedcollection so couldn't help myself. Witches unite! ✨🌱
Today Ted and I built a step to make getting up to Today Ted and I built a step to make getting up to front garden a bit easier. Used scraps of timber from the old retaining wall. He wasn't a fan of the circular saw but loved doing the drilling and screwing. Worked out just as I hoped! I don't have a builders square, but turns out a quilting ruler makes an excellent substitute.
