KCW – Coastal Cargos, Flashback Tees and Fancy Pants

April 28, 2013 by Abby 20 Comments

Coastal Cargos - tuxedo Style

These would have to be some of the least ‘Coastal’ or ‘Cargo’ looking Coastal Cargos I’ve seen. I wanted to play with the pattern and Roman needed some pants for Church, so they’re more Tuxedo style. I really like the pattern, it gives you so many options, so there will be a lot more of these coming. I’ve already bought 5 pieces of fabric for other pairs!

These pants were nice and challenging with quite a few techniques I haven’t tried before. The welt pocket and zip fly were first times for me. The fly nearly drove me insane! I had to pull out a pair of hubby’s jeans and examine them for it to make sense to me. I’m glad I did it though, as one of my aims this year is to try and challenge myself with my sewing. I did let out a ‘squeeee’ of delight when zipping them up on Roman this morning…tiny man trousers!

The pants also give you a lot of opportunities to use some hidden and fun fabric. I used my final scrap of this rainbow stripe fabric that Roman loves. I used it in a pair of slippers for him in a previous KCW and he loves his ‘rainbow slippers’. I’m hoping he’ll be happy to put the pants on for the same reason.

Again, a bribe of a fruit bar resulted in some usable action shots of the pants. Hubby took about 15 photos and then Roman decided to stick his finger in some bird poo and wipe it off on the pants…photo shoot over!

Neon stamping Neon Flashback Tee

I realise I’m a bit late to the Neon trend, but I’ve had this paint for ages and finally got around to using it. It looks yellow in the pot, but very green on the fabric. I think the grey is coming through a bit. Again, I’ve used the Flashback Skinny Tee for the pattern. I’ve lost count of how many of them I’ve made. The shape just fits Roman perfectly, so I don’t think I’ll be trying another top pattern any time soon. I’m not sure if that’s smart or boring?! I cut up a Champagne cork for my stamp and brushed the paint onto it with a paintbrush.

Fancy Pants Leggings Fancy Pants Leggings

And finally, I’ve been making up a few pairs of Fancy Pants Leggings. A few weeks ago I tested the pattern for Laura from Craftstorming and made Roman up a few pairs of pyjamas with Flashback Skinny Tees for tops. I didn’t want the new baby missing out, so this week I also made up some in baby size! These are the 3 – 6 months size and I added the feet for warmth as it will be cold here by the time they fit. I love the bum panel in these pants…it gives you so many options for having fun and when Roman digs under the couch for lost cars, the bum panel looks super cute sticking up in the air!

All in all, I’m really happy with everything I completed this week. I challenged myself with the Coastal Cargos and the making of the Peter Rabbit Jacket and also got a couple of wardrobe staples done for the boys. Some days I got a lot done and others none. How did you fair this week?

He wore them all day with no complaints, so I think that’s a sewing success!

You have had an awesome week Abby! Love all the things you have made. You have been super productive 🙂
I adore the shirt with the neon triangles, I really want one now haha. You know, I don’t have the flashback skinny tee pattern. I am so stingy when it comes to buying patterns.

I know what you mean about buying patterns. I’ve definitely got my money’s worth from it though. I’ve made more than 10 of them and only used 2 sizes so far.

Tees are definitely addictive! Roman doesn’t need anymore but I still have a few ideas in my head that I want to try out.

You had such a productive week. I love all of these – the rainbow details are amazing and adding the feet to the FPLs is such a good idea. I want to copy that T-shirt too.

The coastal cargos a fab Abby (well, it all is!). I’ve been thinking about buying the pattern, I’m after a good all round trouser pattern and thought this might do the trick – great to see them looking so different to those on the pattern pack. You’ve had a good week! I didn’t get made as much as I’d like – as always! But I’m still happy and feel inspired to keep going.

A new hat! I used the free #closetcoresunhat. I've A new hat! I used the free #closetcoresunhat. I've added a hair hole, since why don't all hats have that?! Also added some garden wire to the brim. Instead of finishing the brim edge with bias, I did the usual RST stitch, fold and top stitch. That means the brim is a little shorter than the pattern. I wanted to keep the hat lightweight, so it's unlined and has only the two layers of canvas fabric for the brim. The cotton canvas is a vintage fabric from my stash, which originally cost 15 shillings and 9 pence (I think) per yard.

My dress for this years @sew_melbourne Garden Part My dress for this years @sew_melbourne Garden Party was the Lucca Dress from @schultzapparel. I adore the 18th Century vibe! After toiling my measured size, I ended up going down 2 sizes and after a few minor tweaks I make to most patterns (shorten and move forward the shoulder and realign the side seams) it was good to go. I was planning to finish the front with eyelets but ended up hand sewing in hook and eye tape. I love the clean look! When trying it on I wanted a little more oomph in the hips so I added some tulle hip pads to the sides. I added in seam pockets too because...pockets! The fabric is from deep stash and originally purchased at the Philips Shirt Factory sale in the city maybe 10 years ago?! It was a dream to sew with! I used about 5m because it was only 90cm wide. I'm loving the result and hopefully the weather plays nice and I get another chance to wear it before it turns cold. The dipped waist makes it really comfortable to wear with room for a big lunch! #schlucca #sewmelbourne #sewmelbournegp #imakemyownclothes
