KCW Wrap Up

October 28, 2013 by Abby 7 Comments

And just like that, another Kids Clothes Week has come to an end. They sure do go quickly! I had quite a bit going on last week so didn’t get a huge amount of sewing done, but I’m happy with what I managed to do.

The main thing I worked on was some swim nappies. Now that we’ve got a swimming pool it makes much more sense to have some proper swim nappies. I use cloth nappies but have never sewn any before and I was a bit anxious about it before starting. It was all a fuss about nothing though as these were so quick and easy to make. The actual sewing of each nappy takes about 10 minutes. I made 4 last week, 2 for Roman and 2 for Ted.

I used this tutorial and free pattern to make up my nappies. For my outer layer I used PUL fabric and suede cloth for the inner. The tutorial also uses a layer of lycra on the outside of the nappy, but since it was just for show I didn’t bother. For the edges I used 1″ fold over elastic (FOE). I got the 1″ as it’s nice and wide which makes the sewing foolproof, but next time I’d get the slightly thinner one.

During KCW I also managed to make up a test version of a rash vest to go with the nappies. I used the Recess Raglan by See Kate Sew as my base. I’m really happy with it and will be making up a good version using the green and black lycra you can see in the corner of the picture. I actually bought the lycra ages ago and cannot believe it’s a perfect match to the PUL I bought for the nappies!

I’ll post some action shots when the weather decides to warm up!

How did you go last week? Did you finish everything you were planning to make?

These look so cute. We used them for my kids when they were younger (bought not made!) and they are awesome. My little miss used to get terrible nappy rash from the disposable swim ones.

I made a few things (earlier!) but haven’t managed to get all the photos yet. Hope to this week. Wish it would stop raining!!

Wow, those look awsome?, we do cloth diapies, but I’ve never made any, now you’ve inspired me! I didn’t finish everything, but I have one big finish and one almost finish, so not too bad for my first KCWC!

Oh you should give them a go! So much easier than I was expecting. I went crazy on my first KCW…so easy to do!

    These are great!
Think you could use them as cloth pull-ups for potty training?

The pattern also has directions for a pull on version, which would work better. I also think you’d want an absorbent layer of some kind to contain any spills as they would just sit inside this and leak out of the leg. Some microfibre or something inbetween the 2 layers would work.

Such a great idea to make these Abby. They will get loads of use – can’t wait to see the rash guard.

Quick and satisfying project today making a brush Quick and satisfying project today making a brush roll for my art supplies. Vintage canvas from the stash (which I think is from a bougie Italian designer). Matching bag to come. Then I can grab and go for my next en plein air session.

My dress for this years @sew_melbourne Garden Part My dress for this years @sew_melbourne Garden Party was the Lucca Dress from @schultzapparel. I adore the 18th Century vibe! After toiling my measured size, I ended up going down 2 sizes and after a few minor tweaks I make to most patterns (shorten and move forward the shoulder and realign the side seams) it was good to go. I was planning to finish the front with eyelets but ended up hand sewing in hook and eye tape. I love the clean look! When trying it on I wanted a little more oomph in the hips so I added some tulle hip pads to the sides. I added in seam pockets too because...pockets! The fabric is from deep stash and originally purchased at the Philips Shirt Factory sale in the city maybe 10 years ago?! It was a dream to sew with! I used about 5m because it was only 90cm wide. I'm loving the result and hopefully the weather plays nice and I get another chance to wear it before it turns cold. The dipped waist makes it really comfortable to wear with room for a big lunch! #schlucca #sewmelbourne #sewmelbournegp #imakemyownclothes
My grandma always grew borage and would put it in My grandma always grew borage and would put it in salads. I didn't know anyone else who made salad with flowers in it (it was the 80s) and I thought she was a magical witch. I'm so excited to finally grow it in my own garden! When buying veggie seeds I found borage on @theseedcollection so couldn't help myself. Witches unite! ✨🌱
Today Ted and I built a step to make getting up to Today Ted and I built a step to make getting up to front garden a bit easier. Used scraps of timber from the old retaining wall. He wasn't a fan of the circular saw but loved doing the drilling and screwing. Worked out just as I hoped! I don't have a builders square, but turns out a quilting ruler makes an excellent substitute.
