Boxing Up and Preserving a Wedding Dress – Tutorial

November 17, 2011 by Abby 10 Comments

I, like many others was horrified at the price I was quoted to have my wedding dress packed up. It has since been hanging in the cupboard for the last 6 years. My sister in law hasn't had hers sitting around for quite that long, but when spring cleaning her house, I offered to box up her dress.  It's one of those things that I think isn't really all that hard to do ...

The Countdown to Christmas

November 15, 2011 by Abby Leave a Comment

Well, there is less than 6 weeks until Christmas and I'm getting excited! I tend to go a little crazy around Christmas. I love to have carols playing while I put up the tree and decorate the rest of the house. I try not to go too over the top, but I love how festive the place looks when it's all done. I didn't really do any decorating last year when we were in the flat in ...

Cot Rail Teething Guard – Tutorial

November 13, 2011 by Abby 5 Comments

Roman's cot has teething rails...along the sides only! It didn't take him long to figure this out, so he chews on the ends. I made up some teething rail guards so he can chew on those instead. They are simply some rectangles with straps on the sides that snap onto the back to hold the guards in place. I made them out of a cute cotton print, also used on the sleeping ...

November 11, 2011 by Abby 1 Comment

I'm an Aunty! Julia Lily was born last Friday and I'm totally smittern. Mother and baby are doing very well and we're all so excited to have a new baby in the family. I lasted about 5 minutes from first hearing the news to starting to decorate the little onesie above. I used my alphabet stamps and some Versacraft ink for the lettering and made the little bow out of some ...

Roman’s Smash Cake Session

November 9, 2011 by Abby 3 Comments

On the weekend, we did a Smash Cake session for Roman's 1st Birthday. For those of you unfamiliar with the term, a Smash Cake is a cake made just for the baby. They get to squash it, poke it, eat it and play with it...all in the name of fun! The idea is to take a heap of photos and I think it's a great way of capturing a baby's 1st Birthday. The day before we planned to do it, ...

Sugar-free Carrot and Date Cake

November 9, 2011 by Abby 83 Comments

I'm in two minds about using sugar in a cake made specifically for a baby. On the one hand, it's their birthday, and the only time they have cake, so a little bit of sugar isn't going to do any harm. But on the other hand, they're a baby, they don't need, want or crave the sugar so why get them hooked on it? I think this cake is a perfect compromise. The dates are nice and ...

Cocktail Hour – French Martini

November 7, 2011 by Abby 5 Comments

The French Martini is a great beginner's Martini. Like the Appletini, it's fruity and a little bit on the sweet side. That can often be your downfall though, as the bite of the vodka gets hidden away and you don't realise how potent they are until you've had a few and then get dizzy when you stand up. But don't let a little thing like that stop you.French Martiniserves 11 shot ...

To Grandma’s House We Go!

November 5, 2011 by Abby 3 Comments

Earlier in the week, we all hopped into the car and went up to visit my Grandparents. The last time I saw them was as Roman's Christening...far too long ago!Like many grandmas, she's a fantastic knitter, and Roman was lucky enough to receive a blanket she knitted for him. I love the bright colours and it's nice and big so will be great for when he's in a big boy bed. The ...

Sunny Felt Mobile

November 3, 2011 by Abby 5 Comments

My sister in law is due any day and I have a million ideas for things to make for the baby. I have real trouble picking what to actually make, but knew I wanted to do a mobile. I liked the idea of the happy little sun looking over the baby, so played around until I was happy with it. The sun, clouds and raindrops are made out of felt and I embroidered the face on the sun by ...

How to Sew a Baby Sleeping Bag – Tutorial

October 31, 2011 by Abby 25 Comments

Roman was in need of some light-weight sleeping bags for the warmer weather. Having a look at the ones in the shops, I decided that it would be easy enough, and a lot cheaper to make them up myself. I've used cotton jersey for the lining and a cotton print for the outer. From my research, this is equivalent to 1.0 tog, which is good for most summer use. You could also make this ...

Cleaning my Stove Burners – no scrubbing required!

October 29, 2011 by Abby 3 Comments

I'm almost embarrassed to post this. My stove burners get pretty dirty. I guess I think life is too short to be scrubbing the grease off the stove burners, but now that I know this trick, I don't need to. All you need is a little bit of Ammonia and a zip-loc bag. Get a zip-loc bag and put your dirty stove burners in there. I did two at a time so that I could still use the ...

Happy 1st Birthday Roman

October 27, 2011 by Abby 1 Comment

Well it's been quite a year. There has been not a lot of sleep, quite a few tears and many dirty nappies. But there has also been many smiles, laughs and much joy as we've been our little baby grow into a cheeky boy. I love you with every fibre of my being and you make me unbelievably happy. Your smile warms my heart like nothing else. Happy Birthday Roman!xx ...

Secret pyjamas! My dress for this year's @sew_melb Secret pyjamas! My dress for this year's @sew_melbourne garden party was the Charlie Caftan by @closetcorepatterns. I shortened it at the shoulders by an inch and think I shortened it at the bottom too. I altered the pockets so they attach into the waist panel, because I hate when in-seam pockets flap about and pull at the side seams. The side slits are a double turn narrow hem as the overlock and turn as suggested in the pattern looked puckered. The fabric is a Cotton + Steel rayon by Masaru Suzuki, which is a dream to sew with. I've made another dress in the red colour way.
Beans from the garden and my favourite way to eat Beans from the garden and my favourite way to eat them... Stir fry in hot oil (coconut is delish but whatever you have is fine) until a bit burnt (about 5 mins). Chuck in a few squirts of fish sauce for the last 5 secs and toss through.
Give them a minute to cool if you can lest you burn your mouth.

A new hat! I used the free #closetcoresunhat. I've A new hat! I used the free #closetcoresunhat. I've added a hair hole, since why don't all hats have that?! Also added some garden wire to the brim. Instead of finishing the brim edge with bias, I did the usual RST stitch, fold and top stitch. That means the brim is a little shorter than the pattern. I wanted to keep the hat lightweight, so it's unlined and has only the two layers of canvas fabric for the brim. The cotton canvas is a vintage fabric from my stash, which originally cost 15 shillings and 9 pence (I think) per yard.
