Ready, Set, Go!

October 8, 2012 by Abby 4 Comments

KCWC starts today! Are you sewing along? If you haven't heard of the Kids Clothes Week Challenge before, here's the low-down. The idea is to spend 1 hour each day for one week sewing some kids clothes. Meg hosts the KCWC twice a year and I love the concept! It's on at the change of season, so perfect for getting your little ones wardrobe organised. If you think you'd like to ...

Summer Scarf

September 23, 2012 by Abby 4 Comments

When I did my big Spoonflower order of everything Sunflowers, I also ordered a yard of cotton voile with the sunflower print at half size. I'm always cold, so I wanted to make a lightweight scarf to help keep me warm. The cotton voile was perfect! I was originally going to make both sides of the scarf with the sunflower print, but when the two layers are together it looked ...

Great thrifting!

September 17, 2012 by Abby 3 Comments

I've had some great luck at my local op shops lately. First, I found this great vintage pattern for a skirt. It's my first vintage pattern, so fingers crossed that when I get around to making it, that it turns out well. I also managed to find the wool check fabric on the same trip. It's perfect for the skirt and there's plenty there. Not bad for $5. On my latest trip I ...

Modern Monogramming for Kids

September 8, 2012 by Abby 4 Comments

This is a post I originally wrote for Boys Own Style Month over at Cook Clean Craft.Monograms are a fun way to personalise clothes and they don't need to look like they belong on the corner of a handkerchief. My modern take is based on Stencil Graffiti and uses a big oversized monogram to really make a point! You don't need to be super crafty or have a lot of tools to put this ...

Works in Progress

August 24, 2012 by Abby 2 Comments

I've been really busy this week working on something exciting, so I haven't got a lot to show you. Here's some knitting that I have in progress. When it's finished it will be a lovely big cowl. MadelineTosh has to be the most amazing yarn I've ever worked with! The colours are gorgeous and it just feels incredible! So soft and buttery...mmmmm! I won the yarn as a giveaway on ...

Boy’s Own Style Month at Cook Clean Craft

July 25, 2012 by Abby 3 Comments

Narelle of Cook Clean Craft is hosting 'Boy's Own Style Month' at the moment. For the whole month of July she is featuring posts showing you how to personalise clothes, particularly for boys. Boys clothes can be tricky, you can't simply put a frill on there to pretty them up, so you have to be creative to put a bit of style into it. I am super excited to be guest ...

Adding a Neck Opening to a Tee – Tutorial

July 22, 2012 by Abby 33 Comments

Roman's head is off the charts big! This is not a figure of speech...it is literally off the charts. See, here's a chart!! I thought that as he got a bit older it wouldn't be such a problem, but he still grows out of his tops because the neck gets too tight to pull over his head. In this tutorial, I'll show you how to add an opening to the back of a tee. The technical ...

Fold over Cuffs for Footies or Mittens – Tutorial

June 13, 2012 by Abby 41 Comments

During the cold Winter months, I like putting Roman in footed pyjamas. I know his toes will stay nice and warm. I get cold feet so I feel like he will too. Now that he's in a size 2, they're hard to come by. He has a pair with fold over cuffs that are genius, so I've been studying them. Luckily, it's really easy to add them to a pair of pyjama pants so that any pair can have ...

Goodbye Autumn, Hello Winter!

June 4, 2012 by Abby 31 Comments

I have a strange attraction to things that are possibly so ugly I think they're amazing! I have a pair of embroidered shoes that definitely fit this category and I have a feeling this coat is one of those things, but no one is game to tell me. The making of this coat was a 'meant to be' moment. A friend of mine gave me some old woollen blankets and there was something about ...

KCWC – Part 3

May 2, 2012 by Abby 4 Comments

Kids Clothes Week Challenge is indeed over, but I just couldn't handle having the hooded vest unfinished, so finish it I did! What an awful project! Everything that was wrong with it was all my fault, but it worked out all right in the end. As mentioned in my previous KCWC post, the fabric is a lycra blend so loves to stretch, which made sewing the zip in a nightmare. I ended up ...

KCWC – Part 2

April 29, 2012 by Abby 11 Comments

It's been a very busy week and I've had a lot of fun, but I think I'll be quite happy to have a holiday from my sewing machine for a bit. Today we decided to go for a drive out to the country, so I didn't get to do any sewing today and sadly I didn't get to finish the hoodie vest, but I'm surprised with the amount I did get done. Roman had lots of fun running around in the park ...

KCWC – Part 1

April 26, 2012 by Abby 11 Comments

Well, we're half way through the week and so half way through the Kids Clothes Week Challenge. So far it's been lots of fun and I've been good and organised. Well, organised enough to get lots of sewing done, but not enough to post a project each day. It's been raining all week and so dark I can't take any photos. Anyway, here's what I've made so far:   First up I made Roman ...

Secret pyjamas! My dress for this year's @sew_melb Secret pyjamas! My dress for this year's @sew_melbourne garden party was the Charlie Caftan by @closetcorepatterns. I shortened it at the shoulders by an inch and think I shortened it at the bottom too. I altered the pockets so they attach into the waist panel, because I hate when in-seam pockets flap about and pull at the side seams. The side slits are a double turn narrow hem as the overlock and turn as suggested in the pattern looked puckered. The fabric is a Cotton + Steel rayon by Masaru Suzuki, which is a dream to sew with. I've made another dress in the red colour way.
Beans from the garden and my favourite way to eat Beans from the garden and my favourite way to eat them... Stir fry in hot oil (coconut is delish but whatever you have is fine) until a bit burnt (about 5 mins). Chuck in a few squirts of fish sauce for the last 5 secs and toss through.
Give them a minute to cool if you can lest you burn your mouth.

A new hat! I used the free #closetcoresunhat. I've A new hat! I used the free #closetcoresunhat. I've added a hair hole, since why don't all hats have that?! Also added some garden wire to the brim. Instead of finishing the brim edge with bias, I did the usual RST stitch, fold and top stitch. That means the brim is a little shorter than the pattern. I wanted to keep the hat lightweight, so it's unlined and has only the two layers of canvas fabric for the brim. The cotton canvas is a vintage fabric from my stash, which originally cost 15 shillings and 9 pence (I think) per yard.
