Sew Fab – Boys Cupcake Top

May 6, 2014 by Abby 12 Comments

This was my first make from the Sew Fab Bundle. Winter has definitely arrived and you know how kids and a change of season go...nothing ever fits. When I first opened the Sew Fab Bundle, I knew this was a must make! Tees are quick wins for me. Easy to sew, use little fabric and get lots of use. The pattern is The Cupcake Top (unisex) by Sewing Mama RaeAnna. This is a nice ...

No Sew Leather Jacket Makeover

April 12, 2014 by Abby 14 Comments

Wondering why there are pegs all over my leather jacket? This was a quick little makeover/upcycling project and I'm thrilled with how it turned out. Best of all, there was no sewing involved! This jacket was my Mum's when she was in her 20's. She hasn't kept many clothes from her younger years, but this jacket has survived. As you can see below, it was quite the impressive ...

10 Refashion Projects Using Wool Blankets

April 2, 2014 by Abby 8 Comments

This post was originally blogged on House of Estrela as part of Refashion Month. With all the Fashion Revolution stuff going on, I thought it was perfect timing to bring it back home. Don't forget to join us on April 24th and take the Fashion Revolution pledge. I get great satisfaction out of being able to give an old item a whole new life. It's thrifty, eco friendly and ...

Perfect Pattern Parcel – Summer Concert Tee

March 21, 2014 by Abby 11 Comments

I love the concept of the Perfect Pattern Parcel. It's a semi-regular pattern bundle that supports indie PDF pattern designers AND supports a children's charity. There's a twist too... A good one, not a stupid pointless one like a reality TV show. You get to name your price! You can choose what you think the bundle is worth and that's what you pay. So what's in this first ...

Small Fry Skinny Jeans

March 11, 2014 by Abby 7 Comments

Today I'm showing you my second pair of Small Fry Skinny Jeans...well, Roman's second pair. I first used this pattern here as part of the sew-along of the free 2T pattern. The fit is so perfect I jumped at the chance to join the tour and make Roman a pair in the next size. I love the name of this pattern! So much so, that I thought it was good enough to embroider on the ...

Boys Summer Pyjamas

February 28, 2014 by Abby 12 Comments

It feels like summer is on it's way out already, so I think I got these finished just in time! My lovely sponsors at Sew Creative Supplies provided the fabric and thread for this project. The fabric is Michael Miller Vintage Fire Trucks. Roman picked it out and I was a little surprised when it arrived as the fire engines are a lot bigger than I was expecting! My own fault ...

What Would Celina Do? Lego Stamped Tee

February 20, 2014 by Abby 36 Comments

I first discovered Celina's blog when I came across this tutorial on Pinterest. I've had the idea pinned for such a long time and when Laura asked me 'What Would Celina Do?', I knew straight away that I wanted to do some Lego stamping for my project. This is such a simple and effective project and I'm so pleased with the result! I didn't have a foam brush, so just ...

Things for Girls: Roly Poly Pinafore

January 27, 2014 by Abby 9 Comments

It's nice to do a bit of girl sewing for a change. Today I'm sharing a pinafore I made for my niece using the Roly Poly Pinafore Pattern by Imagine Gnats. This is such a quick pattern to put together, and the result is so cute!   My sewing machine and I have been having a bit of a disagreement over buttonholes, so I skipped buttons and added some snaps instead. The snaps ...

Winter Wonderland Pattern Tour

November 7, 2013 by Abby 18 Comments

The talented ladies from Pattern Anthology have just released the Winter Wonderland Collection. I was so excited when they asked me to join the blog tour I said yes immediately. Then I remembered I had a little baby and my sewing machine was fast becoming ornamental, but I didn't want to miss out on the fun. With Summer on it's way here in Australia, I chose to do a remix of ...

Selfish Sewing Week Wrap Up

September 29, 2013 by Abby 10 Comments

I'm a bit sad that Selfish Sewing Week is over already. Thank you so much to Rachael and Jill for hosting the series. It was so nice to make some things for myself and I can't tell you how excited I am to have some new clothes in my wardrobe. I haven't really been shopping since before I was pregnant with Roman! That's like 4 years ago! I got a lot more done this week than I ...

Contrast Stripe Shoulder Tee

September 26, 2013 by Abby 21 Comments

Heidi Klum was wearing one of these sheer contrast shoulder tees on an episode of Project Runway and I thought it was kinda cool. Then, Jen from Mend and Make New made one. Straight after seeing Jen's version, I went to my stash to look for some fabrics I could use to make one of my own. I was originally going to use the Liberty Jersery for a tee with Peter Pan collar, but ...

Secret pyjamas! My dress for this year's @sew_melb Secret pyjamas! My dress for this year's @sew_melbourne garden party was the Charlie Caftan by @closetcorepatterns. I shortened it at the shoulders by an inch and think I shortened it at the bottom too. I altered the pockets so they attach into the waist panel, because I hate when in-seam pockets flap about and pull at the side seams. The side slits are a double turn narrow hem as the overlock and turn as suggested in the pattern looked puckered. The fabric is a Cotton + Steel rayon by Masaru Suzuki, which is a dream to sew with. I've made another dress in the red colour way.
Beans from the garden and my favourite way to eat Beans from the garden and my favourite way to eat them... Stir fry in hot oil (coconut is delish but whatever you have is fine) until a bit burnt (about 5 mins). Chuck in a few squirts of fish sauce for the last 5 secs and toss through.
Give them a minute to cool if you can lest you burn your mouth.

A new hat! I used the free #closetcoresunhat. I've A new hat! I used the free #closetcoresunhat. I've added a hair hole, since why don't all hats have that?! Also added some garden wire to the brim. Instead of finishing the brim edge with bias, I did the usual RST stitch, fold and top stitch. That means the brim is a little shorter than the pattern. I wanted to keep the hat lightweight, so it's unlined and has only the two layers of canvas fabric for the brim. The cotton canvas is a vintage fabric from my stash, which originally cost 15 shillings and 9 pence (I think) per yard.
