Cookie Puzzle

December 18, 2012 by Abby 8 Comments

I've been so inspired by Laura's amazing decorated cookies (here and here) during this series, that I thought I would give it a go myself. I've never decorated cookies before, (I know?! I think I'm the only one) but in the middle of the night I got the idea for a Cookie Puzzle and had to give it a go! This makes a fun little gift, just make sure that if your cookies feel ...

Gingerbread House Tree Ornaments

December 17, 2012 by Abby 3 Comments

I love Laura's idea of making mini Gingerbread houses to hang on your Christmas Tree. I think it's a great way to use up any dough scraps you have left over from making a larger house or other Gingerbread construction. The smell would be very inviting every time you walked past the tree. Laura has got the directions and templates here on her blog. ...

Sea Salted Double Choc Marzipan Chunk Cookies

December 13, 2012 by Abby 1 Comment

Laura made these amazing cookies as part of The Great Food Blogger Cookie Swap. I love chunky cookies and I think it's always handy to have such an adaptable recipe in your stash. If you aren't a fan of chocolate and marzipan, leave them out and simply change the ingredients to suit. Nuts, dried fruit, cocoa nibs or even m&ms. I love that you can leave out the cocoa too ...

Pfeffernüsse

December 10, 2012 by Abby 6 Comments

Hubby loves these German biscuits, but I must confess, I'm not a huge fan. A bit too much cinnamon for me! Anyway, I was looking forward to baking them to see if I liked them better if I'd made them myself.* This recipe is based on this one from London Eats. I've changed the ingredients slightly, but they're still packed with spice. The Spice Mix will make more mix than ...

Stollen Inspired Spiral Cookies

December 8, 2012 by Abby 1 Comment

Today Laura has this fantastic sounding recipe for Stollen Inspired Spiral Cookies. I'm a huge fan of dried fruits and more so marzipan, I love the super sweet almond flavour. I love it so much, I even had a pet rabbit named Marzipan! I have added some Marzipan to the shopping list so I can make up a batch of these next time I get a Marzipan craving, which can't be far off! ...

Stained Glass Cookies

December 6, 2012 by Abby 2 Comments

These are such pretty cookies. I've made them for Valentine's Day previously using heart cutters and they are always well received. I've stated that the recipe makes about 32, but I actually didn't use my whole batch of dough. It was about 36°C on the day I baked them and my dough was melting so quickly I gave up after cutting out the 6 I used in the photo. I put the rest of ...

Sugar and Spice Cookies

December 2, 2012 by Abby 2 Comments

These cookies are a nice light version of Gingerbread. The dough is made like pastry, with the food processor doing all the work. Sugar and Spice Cookies makes about 32 1 1/2 cups (225g) plain flour 3/4 cup (165g) brown sugar 2 tsp ground ginger 1 tsp mixed spice 1/4 tsp ground cloves 150g chilled butter, chopped into small cubes 1 egg yolk 1/4 cup (55g) raw ...

Last Minute Gift Idea

November 28, 2012 by Abby 2 Comments

You can never have too many last minute ideas! Especially for Christmas presents. I find these great for teenagers. I have no clue what they would like! It's not like it was THAT long ago that I was a teenager either. You can pick up everything for this at the supermarket, so you can even put it together in the car on the way. The toothbrush adds a bit of humour, makes it ...

Zumbo Salted Caramel Macarons Review

October 23, 2012 by Abby 4 Comments

First, I showed you how the Zumbo Brownies turned out. BUT, you've all seen a Brownie made from a box before, so how about the Macarons?!As far as Macarons go, these were easy to make. They were a bit more involved than making the Brownies, but they are still Macarons. The packet contains pretty much everything you need to make the Macarons. There is a pack of meringue mix, a ...

Featherlight Sponge Cake

September 14, 2012 by Abby 3 Comments

My Father-in-law turned 60 last week and had a party on the weekend. I asked him if he would like a birthday cake and he said he wanted a 'layered sponge filled with fresh whipped cream and strawberries, covered with some chocolate with strawberries' or something like that.Sure! No problem. Then I realised I'd never made a sponge before and had a little freak out. Then I ...

Secret pyjamas! My dress for this year's @sew_melb Secret pyjamas! My dress for this year's @sew_melbourne garden party was the Charlie Caftan by @closetcorepatterns. I shortened it at the shoulders by an inch and think I shortened it at the bottom too. I altered the pockets so they attach into the waist panel, because I hate when in-seam pockets flap about and pull at the side seams. The side slits are a double turn narrow hem as the overlock and turn as suggested in the pattern looked puckered. The fabric is a Cotton + Steel rayon by Masaru Suzuki, which is a dream to sew with. I've made another dress in the red colour way.
Beans from the garden and my favourite way to eat Beans from the garden and my favourite way to eat them... Stir fry in hot oil (coconut is delish but whatever you have is fine) until a bit burnt (about 5 mins). Chuck in a few squirts of fish sauce for the last 5 secs and toss through.
Give them a minute to cool if you can lest you burn your mouth.

A new hat! I used the free #closetcoresunhat. I've A new hat! I used the free #closetcoresunhat. I've added a hair hole, since why don't all hats have that?! Also added some garden wire to the brim. Instead of finishing the brim edge with bias, I did the usual RST stitch, fold and top stitch. That means the brim is a little shorter than the pattern. I wanted to keep the hat lightweight, so it's unlined and has only the two layers of canvas fabric for the brim. The cotton canvas is a vintage fabric from my stash, which originally cost 15 shillings and 9 pence (I think) per yard.
